I’m baarat particularly of the section with the witch on the isl Either my memory of the first two books is really faulty, or my personality changed, or Barker’s writing did, or something. One of the strongest elements of the first two books were the art, and the paintings in Absolute Midnight were pretty amazing too. Being a long ansolute fan of Barker’s, this just made the series even that much more appealing to me.
In addition, she becomes more and more evil and closer to becoming the Empress of the Abarat.

The one time that she seems set on a course anger fulled midnught a friend is killed she just fizzles out. His reading of the story brings ecery character to life. The Wild Adventure of Jasper Renn.
When Barker mentions something, for instance in book 2 Carrion tells Candy how his family died, it always has an importance in the story and I appreciate it. Lovecraft like cosmic darkness. But one wishes the journey of the first book could have gone on far, far longer, if this was its ultimate destination. Villainy eventually reaches a point where it just gets dull, as does the miracle of discovery by the heroine who seems to wield powers she can’t explain. As far as complaints go, I can’t really think of any. Absolute Midnight is packed with tension, action and adventure as things really take off.
