Only once in a while did Johnny’s tortured plight feel real, but again, the cartoonish nature balanced that out. It smells really bad! The second is the poor, anxiety ridden child that lives next-door to Johnny, Squee. Things just kind of happen, going from one event to the next. My copy of the book is the so-called Director’s cut. It’s by no means a bad book, but it is a hard one to really give a description of or opinion on.

Vasquez recently returned to his more famous creation, Invader Zim. But he is still, well, himself, just less angry. He drains his victims of blood to paint over a wall in his house to prevent a monster from escaping.

The artwork in the book is probably the thing I like most. Many of the characters are thin nearly to the point of being stick figures. So there is still a good environment for him to come back.

Vasquez intended a tapeworm named Scolex to be one of Johnny’s voices, but the character never made it into the finished series. His parents hate him, and the world is a scary place for the poor kid.

The comic is high-contrast black and white with stylized and geometric cartoon characters. Neither of his parents care for him, especially his father, who works countless hours at a dead end job and leads a miserable life after raising Squee. JTHM is a dark and surreal jfhm that does have laughs to offer and strong art, but it’s storyline is barely there.
