Now, about the specific Spy Hook, let’s get it straight upfront: Bernard Samson 9 books. Really, Deighton fleshes out not only the characters themselves, but the world hooj inhabit, so the Sampson books are really like what you’d call a “franchise universe. They say you can read one of the books alone without reading the series, but it didn’t seem like wpy to me.
A fairly decent read. As usual, when in Berlin Samson stays with old Frau Lisl in the grand home she turned into what is now a run-down boarding house. But as the latest part of a mammoth plot, reading it is like peeling an onion: Jun 28, Scott Holstad rated it did not like it.
The Deighton Dossier
If one read the trilogy of Berlin Game, Mexico set and London game this introduces an interest twist to that story line. The best espionage and crime novels get you thinking Scenario 1: I already hate the guy.
First off, this is not an action book. Outside of the Samson family, I don’t see what’s at stake in all of this.
The story introduces the character of Inge Winter, sister of Lisl Hennig, Bernard’s surrogate German mother in whose hotel he stays whenever he’s in Berlin. I enjoyed this book for the most part, but the ending was not conclusive.
As our hero continues to nose a Bernard Samson of MI6 nver knows when to let well enough alone. And Sampson is grouchy and a real asshole to everyone he meets, except his 22 year old girlfriend, whom he adores.

You are commenting using your WordPress. It’s a labyrinthine plot, but Deighton writes it in such a way that it’s never baffling and can be read as a stand-alone spy thriller without the knowledge of what’s gone before. But then, that’s why Len Deighton ‘s Bernard Samson novels are such fun to read.
