Alex Flinn did amazing at capturing the side of the young man’s point of view, but failed to capture the hurt that Caitlin was still going through. I was collecting rejection slips at age seven!

Overall, I give props to Alex Flinn for this fine work of art, venturing to something more mature than in her usual fantasy books.

Maybe even good enough to get into this school. I really like how even though she is dealing with past abuse and a fresh start, she is duva so ready to enjoy life.

This is not like a fantasy trilogy where it’s essential to go in order. It sent a nice message about abuse, y’know?

Instead, it is the story of a approximately a year in the life of a teen-aged girl who happens to love opera and learns a few valuable life lessons along the way. Maybe good enough to get a dessert named after me someday Peaches Melba was named after a diva or maybe a town.

There’s one amazing moment, little action, but certainly not the one that would somehow satisfy. Kendra reveals that she is Magda, punished to remain a servant forever because of her careless spellwork but she can now return home as well. This book helped me understand that people can change. It takes Caitlin a long time to figure out that pounds is not fat nor is it any reason to panic.

An excerpt from the book was included in Liz Claiborne, Inc’s Love is Not Abuse curriculum, which was formulated to teach students about dating violence. Yet Caitlin does begin to find her true self, and she blossoms despite the formidable odds. Caitlin is worried for her mom dating a guy that is married and has kids.
