And The Book of the New Sun is, overall, a plot-driven story, which means that more often than not I was pushing myself through because I was fascinated by the world, rather than genuinely enjoying the book because I liked the story. Bishop Severian might have made a great torturer, and maybe he was a torturer. This was a truly disappointing read given how much hype the fanboys have created about the series.
I don’t rate many books at five stars, and while the others were good, they varied between 3. Even God can’t be supernatural from His own point of view. This book series deserves a place next to Emily Dickinson and Shakespeare in my opinion.
Set up a giveaway. Zelazny’s Lord of Light did something different, but by not by a whole lot. Ex I am by no means competent to review this literary masterpiece, but — having read the litany of confusion on the review pages of this volume and its companions — I wish to state the following, simply in order to be helpful.

I’ve never read anything else quite like this — an epic sci-fi fantasy told entirely from the point of view of a character whose perspective is radically different from ours, leaving it to us to piece together the contours of his universe as well as, often, the details of the plot. The only reason I chose to go with Martin first was that was clearly his year, with the TV series coming out and out store shifting more than 50 copies of A Game of Thrones every day.
Throughout, it both promises and delivers. He should have skipped the entire soul-reincarnation bit. Therefore the following section is going to be more trying to explain to myself what happened, and less identifying and discussing themes.
He might, in fact, be the ultimate bad guy in the entire novel.
As Peter Wright writes in this review http: If you have made it this far alongside Severian, dear reader, you will not be disappointed. I will say that Wolfe’s prose can be beautiful even as it’s veering into incomprehensibility. Therefore, new readers need to dedicate themselves to unraveling the many layers of plot, religious symbolism, literary references, and narrative sleight-of-hand.
Gene Wolfe states the obvious I sort of figured out and leaves so many open unresolved questions. The story itself leaves a lot to be desired.

I Did Not Die 1 day ago. There are action set pieces and moments of dark despair and tense moments fraught with uncertainty, but underlying all of that is the knowledge that Severian, at least, will end up running the place.
There were surprises, but nothing shocking. He regularly interprets certain scientific processes as magical and casually skims over tantalising details because he considers them mundane. The Black Sun, in the context of the book, may represent Saturn and delusion.
