Ud this major work of German-language poetic realism, Swiss author Gottfried Keller transports the star-crossed lovers to the Swiss countryside and turns the classic Renaissance drama into a piece of 19th century social criticism. The title of Gottfried Keller ‘s story “A Village Romeo and Juliet” “Romeo und Julia auf dem Dorf” prepares the reader for warring families, frustrated love, and tragic death, but his addition of the word “village” signals a particular reworking of the Shakespearean tale.
This is where the plots deviates crucially from ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and where, to my mind, it becomes less effective than its precursor.

May 23, Astrid rated it really liked it. Still, personally I’m afraid I found this plot development more annoyingly stupid than tragically moving. As Mulia remember it the core of the story is a dispute between two men over ownership of a small triangle of land adjoining both their gardens and the tragic effects on the families. I love this version of the Romeo and Juliet story: The author then has to launch into a lengthy explanation of how the couple felt they had been raised to different standards of respectability, back when their families had still been of good standing, and weren’t able to conceive of such a non-standard procedure as getting married without parental blessing etc etc.
