I mean, I studied this and it’s as I remember it when I studied it. Just because Rooster Byron is a drunk who’s banned from every pub in town and supplies the local kids with illegal substances while telling them preposterous lies butterdorth getting a few of the prettier girls pregnant, it hadn’t crossed my mind that he might also be Jesus.
It’s bus stop-drinking, wet sponge-throwing, new estates, over-zealous district councils; but also those deep, dark leaves that canopy the stage, the rich earth on Rylance’s hands, the faint scent of woodsmoke and mulch that drifts across the theatre. Troy Whitworth — local thug, the same age as Ginger; his stepdaughter, whom it is strongly implied he sexually abuses, goes missing in the play; he badly beats Johnny up at the end of the play. Buutterworth one scene in the Broadway production, Mark Rylance is wearing an aviator’s leather cap and goggles. I can’t even imagine what it must be like to watch this play live- just reading it had me both laughing and shivering.

Had I not just read Butterworth’s most recent play, ‘The Ferryman’, I might have been tempted to rate this a full 5; however, it does not QUITE reach the heights of that masterpiece, and I had a wee mite of difficulty with some of the lingo and references here that made it a butterworyh go at times. People who like unusual takes on religion. The local authorities want to evict buttrworth, his son wants to spend the day with him, the town thug wants to teach him a lesson, and his ragtag group of friends want to party with him.
